BACKGROUND STATEMENT

After carrying out a baseline survey in Busoga, it was found out that;
• The youth population takes a share of more than 60%.
• 70% of the youth are Girls and these have been the most vulnerable since over 40% of them are school dropouts at a teenage stage.
• Due to lack of proper sex education, many girls have dropped out of school due to early pregnancies. In addition, there is lack of scholastic materials and school fees to keep them in school as many come from poor financial backgrounds.
• It was noted that children to teenage mothers are also exposed to malnutrition and early infant mortality due to food insecurity, low incomes to access medical care and low access to quality education.

• As a result of absolute poverty, the boys are led into dropping out of school so as to look for income and take care of their siblings and sometimes family members. They are driven into activities like gambling, Charcoal burning, petty and aggravated theft among others. It was also noted that they end up in groups as well as drug addiction so they end up uneducated and a nuisance to society.
• Some of the activities performed by the youths in search of a better living such as charcoal burning, tree cutting for purposes of firewood as well as open burning od firewood have led to environmental degradation and the unfavorable climatic changes which is the root cause of low agricultural yields and long drought seasons.

It is on the basis of the above findings that that AYE-UGANDA was born to bring back hope in the youth through lobbying for vocational trainings, give back life to our environment and to enhance youth livelihoods which in turn bring support to the elderly, since the elderly are supported by Youth whose livelihoods are sustainable.
